Carl Sagan Prize for Science Popularization
1. About the Award
The AICASE has instituted the Carl Sagan Prize for Science Popularization award funded by XYZ. The object is to promote Public Outreach and Education in Astronomy and allied fields. The award carries a cash prize of Rs 10,000/ awarded annually for notable and important contributions to the areas it addresses. The award encourages and recognizes the popularization of science in the country. The Prize shall be awarded once every year for outstanding work done by an individual for the popularization of science in any Indian language, including English.
2. Nomination Criteria
The nominees will be individuals or groups who have made significant and outstanding contributions in the area of Public Outreach and Education in Astronomy and allied fields. Nominations once made will remain valid for two cycles of the award. There will be no age limit. The award will be given to individuals or groups on the basis of the work done primarily in India. The nominee must have had a distinguished career as a writer, editor, journalist, lecturer, radio or television programme director, science photographer or illustrator, which has enabled him/her to interpret science (including medicine), research and technology to the public. He/She should have a knowledge of the role of science, technology and research in the enrichment of cultural heritage and in the solution of problems of humanity.
3. Application
All nominations for the award must be received by the AICASE, by the deadline as indicated on the website of the AICASE. All nominations are to be submitted via the online interface given below. Nominations can be made by Heads of Institutions and other eminent members of the AICASE.
For the award year 2024, the nominations for the award must be received by 15 Dec 2023.

4. Selection Process
A five-member Award Selection Committee (ASC) is constituted by the AICASE ensuring technical and gender representation. Two members of the selection committee will be nominated by the donors for a three-year term. Each member of the ASC receives all nominations along with the supporting material. The ASC will communicate the result of its deliberations to the AICASE council within three months following the submission deadline.
5. Result of the Award
The successful nominee will be informed of the decision of the AICASE council. The recipient of the award, or a representative when the award is made to a group, will be invited to deliver a special lecture at the annual meeting of the Society.
